Your accommodation is only a five minute walk to the town centre with it's cinema, shops and restaurants and less than a one minute walk to the shores of Lake Te Anau. We also provide pickups from the bus depot or airport.

Te Anau is the gateway to New Zealand's largest and most spectacular national park - The World Heritage status Fiordland National Park. Te Anau is also the closest town to the world renowned Milford Sound which is just 2 hours away by car. The Accommodation

Your hosts, Tony and Denise. Alpenhorn Motel offers 7 well-appointed accommodation units. 5 studio units and 2 family units (sleeps 1-7). Wireless Internet Access is also available. Our motel units are warm and cosy with full kitchen facilities, phone, electric blankets and separate shower and toilet. A continental breakfast is available if you wish. Each unit has its own private garden. We also have available for guests, the use of our laundry, BBQ, trampoline and courtesy car. All our units have just been recently renovated.

Deluxe Family Unit Photos	Deluxe Family Unit The Deluxe Family Unit has a full kitchen, microwave, queen bed in the lounge and off the passageway is a bedroom with three single beds. There is a large ensuite off the passageway and the unit can take two foldaways. There is heating in all rooms, a private garden out in front of the unit. (sleeps seven) - this is a large unit.

Standard Family Unit Photos	Standard Family Units Standard family unit has kitchenette, microwave, ensuite, queen bed in the lounge and two single beds in the bedroom. You can also have one foldaway bed. There is heating in each room and a private garden out in the front of the units. (sleeps five)
Twinbed Unit Photos	Twin bed Units Twin bed units have a kitchenette, microwave, each have ensuite, a queen bed and a single bed. There is heating and a private garden out in front of each unit (sleeps three).
Alpenhorn Grounds Photos	Alpenhorn Grounds Alpenhorn is in a quiet location and yet close to the lake and the town. You will have the use of our BBQ and trampoline. The laundry is also available and if there is anything else you need then please just ask!

Lake Te Anau

Te Anau township sits at the southern end of Lake Te Anau, bordered by farmland to the east and by mountains to the west. Lake Te Anau is the largest glaciated Lake in New Zealand and is second only in size to Lake Taupo. During the summer months the lake is used for boating, water-skiing and swimming and the fishing season lasts all year round.

Milford Sound

Milford Sound is a major draw card for visitors to the Fiordland region and this beautiful location is just a two hour drive from Te Anau. The road to Milford Sound is wonderfully picturesque and there are scenic stops and short walks along the way that you may like to incorporate into your journey. At Milford, there are several cruising and kayaking companies that operate tours on the Fiord throughout the day. If you would rather sit back, relax and let someone else do the driving- then there are full day coach and cruise tours departing from Te Anau daily. Discuss with the Alpenhorn staff and they will help you decide what is the best choice for you.

Doubtful Sound

Doubtful Sound is another popular day trip from Te Anau. The tour starts off with a boat across stunning Lake Manapouri where you travel to West Arm Power Station. Then by bus over the Wilmot Pass and down to Deep Cove, where your cruise or kayak tour on Doubtful Sound begins. Being three times longer than Milford Sound and with its many branching fiords, there is a lot to explore. Doubtful Sound is very remote and you may be lucky enough to see dolphins, penguins and seals.

Scenic Flights

Scenic flights in Fiordland Take a helicopter, plane or floatplane tour from Te Anau around Fiordland. From a short 10 minute scenic flight to Mount Luxmore, to a much longer personalized tour encompassing the entire West Coast of Fiordland - the options are endless! You are also able to take flights from Milford Sound and witness the tarn fed waterfalls, cliffs and rugged coast from the air.

Walking Tracks

Te Anau Walks Fiordland National Park has an abundance of walking tracks from short 10 minute ambles to multi-day mountain hikes. Three of New Zealand's nine 'Great Walks' are in Fiordland National Park and due to their popularity, the Milford, Routeburn and Kepler tracks operate on a booking system and would usually need to be booked ahead at the Department of Conservation Great Walks booking office. Other popular multi-day walks around the Te Anau area include the Hollyford, Greenstone, Caples and Dusky tracks. There are hundreds if not thousands of other tracks to explore around Fiordland and our staff at Alpenhorn are happy to suggest a walk to suit any age or fitness level.

Te Anau-au Glow Worm Caves

Take a cruise on Lake Te Anau to the Glow Worm Caves. You will be taken through the caves and witness the glow worms lighting up the caves with their tiny lights. Tours depart from Te Anau several times daily.

Jetboating

Jeboating in Fiordland Take a thrilling jetboat ride on the Waiau river which flows between Lakes Te Anau and Manapouri and experience three of the filming locations of the Lord of the Rings movie. You may recognise the stunning scenery of the river to be that of the River Anduin as shown on the Lord of the Rings. You also have a choice of taking a Floatplane or Helicopter scenic flight combination with this tour. If your journey takes you on the Southern Scenic Route, South of Te Anau, then you may wish to jetboat on the wild Wairaurahiri river. There are options departing from Te Anau, Manapouri, Tuatapere or Clifden and there are tours varying from 3-9 hours in duration. You can even choose to combine a Jetboating and Helicopter adventure!

Fishing

Fiordland fishing! There are rainbow and brown trout to be caught in the lakes and rivers around Te Anau - whether you enjoy spinning, trolling or fly fishing, there is something for you all. The fishing season on Lake Te Anau lasts all year round and the rivers and smaller lakes are usually open from October to April. Check the fish and game regulations booklet for the Southland region for season dates. Get some local knowledge to increase your chances of hooking the big one - take a guided fishing trip and be taken to some scenic fishing spots

Te Anau Golf Course Te Anau Golf Club has an 18-hole course located at the southern end of Lake Te Anau, where it affords magnificent views of the lake and surrounding mountains. Just a 5 minute drive from the town centre, green fees are payable to the clubrooms where golf club and golf cart hire is also available.
